Near term: the assistant becomes ordinary
Voice and visual AI in normal-looking frames is already commercial. Expect better battery life, wider prescription support and more markets rather than dramatic new capabilities.
Medium term: the lens becomes active
Electronic tint and adaptive focus change what a lens is. If autofocus eyewear ships successfully, it will be the biggest change to prescription eyewear since progressives.
Long term: display glasses replace screens, partially
Full-colour, wide-field-of-view, all-day AR glasses remain unsolved. The constraints are brightness, power and optical manufacturing, not software.
Probably not soon
Smart contact lenses, retinal displays for general consumers and neural interfaces beyond the wrist remain research topics. Treat confident timelines with scepticism.
