Waveguide Displays Explained

How a lens can carry an image from the temple of your frame into your eye.

The basic idea

A projector in the frame arm shoots light into a thin transparent plate. Diffractive structures trap the light inside, guide it across the lens, then release it toward the pupil.

Why it is hard

Only a fraction of the light reaches the eye, so the light engine must be extremely bright. Gratings behave differently per wavelength, which makes uniform colour difficult and expensive.

What this means for buyers

Expect monochrome or limited colour, a modest field of view, and best results indoors or in shade. Judge a waveguide product on legibility, not on specifications.
