What Are Autofocus Glasses?

Eyewear whose lens power changes automatically so near and distance vision both stay sharp.

The problem they solve

After around 45, the eye's own lens stiffens and near focus fades. Progressive lenses solve this with fixed zones, which means moving your head to find the right part of the lens.

How autofocus lenses work

Sensors estimate how far away you are looking, then the lens changes power electronically. Liquid-crystal designs alter refractive index with a voltage; deformable designs physically change lens shape.

Where the technology stands

Announced and prototyped, not commercially available. Battery life, lens durability, optical quality across the full aperture and price all remain unproven at consumer scale.
