Retinal projection

Scanning a low-power laser image directly onto the retina.

Research / Prototype

What it is

A display approach that forms the image on the retina rather than on an intermediate panel.

How it works

A MEMS mirror steers modulated laser light through the pupil, painting the image line by line.

Why it matters

Retinal projection can create images that stay in focus regardless of the viewer's refractive error.

Advantages

  • Large depth of focus
  • Potential accessibility uses
  • Very small optics

Current limitations

  • Eyebox alignment
  • Laser safety certification
  • Low production volumes

Commercial readiness

Specialist and assistive products only.
